                 Welcome to the South Texas VA Renal Clinic

Mission: To provide excellent consultative care for Veterans with acute and chronic kidney diseases, electrolyte disorders and hypertension.

Services: Outpatient Renal Clinic

  • Chronic kidney disease, evaluation and management
  • Proteinuria/glomerular disease, evaluation and management
  • Hypertension, evaluation and management
  • Electrolyte disorders, evaluation and management
  • Kidney stones, evaluation and medical (non-procedural) management
  • Renal transplant candidacy evaluation
  • Renal transplant follow-up care
  • Anemia management for anemia associated with kidney disease

              Inpatient Renal Consult Service

  • Acute kidney injury, evaluation and management
  • End stage renal disease hospital care
  • Consultative care of electrolyte, mineral and hypertensive disorders
  • Consultative care for glomerular or tubulointerstitial diseases

Procedures provided:

  • Outpatient and Inpatient Hemodialysis
  • Inpatient Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy
  • Inpatient Peritoneal Dialysis
  • Inpatient placement of temporary hemodialysis access


The Renal Clinic is internationally recognized for medical research, including basic and clinical studies funded by the National Institutes for Health, VA Merit, and other funding agencies. Currently, investigators funded by the VA and other sources are involved in the following projects:

  • Determinants of chronic kidney injury
  • Novel therapeutic approaches to the management of chronic kidney disease
  • Cell biology of kidney imjury in diabetes and aging
  • Center for the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT)
  • Ongoing trials with hypoxia inducible factor agents for anemia in kidney disease

The Renal Clinic offers electronic consultation to VA Primary Care Physicians (PCP) and a telemedicine program is in development to serve outlying areas.

Graduate Medical Education:

The Renal Clinic is proud to be affiliated with the University of Texas Health and Science Center (UTHASC) and participate in the education and training of the next generation of physicians. All of our residents and fellows are mentored closely by staff physicians when evaluating and treating our Veterans.
