South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS)
Health Promotion Disease Prevention (HPDP)
The STVHCS HPDP is created to provide effective interventions for promoting healthy behaviors within the Veteran population. Clinicians and support staff, throughout STVHCS, participate in the delivery of the HPDP messages, provide health coaching, and encourage healthy lifestyle changes in a health oriented, proactive, goal-setting, and partnership based manner.
Key HPDP messages are based on scientific evidence, and focused around 9 core Healthy Living Messages:
- Be Tobacco Free
- Be Physically Active
- Eat Wisely
- Strive for a Healthy Weight
- Be Safe
- Manage Stress
- Limit Alcohol
- Get Recommended Screenings and Immunizations
- Be Involved in Your Health Care
For more information on the 9 messages, Veterans can talk to their health care provider or visit www.prevention.va.gov.
To reach as many Veterans as possible, the HPDP runs a 9 Healthy Living Messages multi-media campaign (ie Facebook, Twitter, newsletters, hospital signage) which can be followed at www.facebook.com/SanAntonioVAMC and www.twitter.com/SanAntonioVAMC. The HPDP has speakers available and will attend outreach programs.
