South Texas VA Staff hosts local families for holidays

SAN ANTONIO – The South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) is hosting local Veteran families at the third annual Adopt-A-Veteran program December 18, 2015 beginning at 2 p.m. in the Recreation Center at the Audie L. Murphy Hospital. Individuals pick up from 2 to 3 p.m. and families pick up from 3 to 4 p.m.

The Adopt-A-Veteran program is  to provide VA patients and their families a fun, holiday experience including gifts donated by VA staff, local agencies and businesses.

This year, staff adopted 41 families and 38 individual Veterans from the San Antonio and surrounding communities and purchased, wrapped and delivered over 400 gifts. Individual services in the hospital who adopt a Veteran receive a “wish-list” from the family to provide needed items.

Voluntary Services sponsors the event in collaboaration with many of their community partners like Disabled American Veterans & Auxiliary, American Legion & Auxiliary, Paralyzed Veterans of America and many more. Voluntary Services Specialist Liz Cazares said this event is symbolic of their outreach efforts. “The work we do every day is so impactful, but this event is probably the single most important affirmation of why we do what we do.”
