The South Texas Veterans Health Care System’s Geriatrics and Extended Care Service is offering a free seminar to caregivers of dementia patients. The Dementia Immersion Simulation Experience (DISE) seminar is directed at increasing caregivers’ understanding of what it is like living with dementia and how to improve communication with their loved ones.
The two-hour seminar will consist of a virtual reality activity, a video on communicating, and a dementia simulation scenario.
After the activities, caregivers will receive a presentation on the causes of behaviors of dementia patients and be provided with communication techniques to better interact with their loved ones. If caregivers would like further information on dementia, they are encouraged to attend the monthly Introduction to Dementia class and the Dementia Caregiver Support and Education Program meetings.
Those completing the two-hour program will receive an MP3 player with music selected by the caregiver to implement music therapy with the person under their care.
To sign up for the Dementia Immersion Simulation , please contact Kristy Preston at (210) 617-5356.
